Neither life nor marketing should be one dimensional

A 3D grid pattern creates an optical illusion of an infinite, enclosed space, much like the innovative campaigns crafted by Glued Limited. The grid lines converge toward a central point, forming a perspective box with evenly spaced horizontal and vertical lines on all visible surfaces.

I came to a happy realisation today. Life and work had started to become a bit tiresome, or at the least uninspiring. I only learnt this by needing to do some volunteering and work for a charity I am connected with?

Having committed to spending a few hours mentoring young people, I set about my day. I wouldn't say I was unenthused but at first it felt a bit like going through the motions. I am pleased to say I ended up being animated in my mentoring. And on returning to my desk I found myself more engaged and enthused for and by my day-to-day work. And yes I do find the mentoring fulfilling, but I don't think it was simply that which helped buoy me.

Getting engaged and enthused outside of what I have been solely focused on for so many weeks and months – namely work – re-invigorated me for everything I do. It brings some meaning to that saying, disturbingly used in The Shinning, 'All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.'. In this instance it wasn't play so much as a different sort of work that did it.

This very realisation helped me develop a new perspective on the work we do. Using the same messages and same channels will not only make us, the producers, dull but it will suppress our audiences and clients too.

Not that I am advocating change for changes sake. We are bound to get tired of the messages and channels we use before our audiences do. We see them far more frequently and in more detail.

But the notion of 'ringing the changes' to re-invigorate is well worth keeping in mind and encouragement to all of us to our marketing fresh. It'll do us no end of good as well as improve awareness, leads or sells – depending on what you are after. The other more expressive saying that says it more for me is one my father used use sardonically. Perhaps he is wrong and maybe there is more value in 'Variety is the spice of life.' than many of us appreciate.
